Alexia Stokes

Dr Alexia Stokes is a senior scientist at the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), Montpellier. After obtaining a PhD from the University of York (U.K.), in plant biomechanics and biology, Alexia specialized in forest response to wind storms, working in Germany and France. For the last 15 years, she has focused on the biophysics of vegetated mountain slopes subjected to landslides and erosion. Working mainly in the French Alps and China, Alexia aims to understand the fundamental processes behind ecosystem response and resilience to natural catastrophes, in order to develop sound management strategies. Alexia serves on the editorial board of three international journals and is co-author of over 100 scientific papers and three books. She is coordinator of IUFRO WP 8.03.00 – Natural hazards and risk management, and is the joint leader of the research team ‘Ecology and Diversity of Plant Communities’ at the laboratory AMAP (Botany and Modelling of Plant Architecture and Vegetation) in Montpellier.
